Hualien County:Hualien harbor、Shi-Ti harbor

Hualien county is located at east side of Taiwan and faces to the Pacific Ocean directly. The coastline begins from the northeast township - Siou Lin, and ends in the southeast township - Feng Bin. The total length of coastline is 124 km. All of the coastline and the offshore areas are appertain to the watershed of Kuroshio, therefore, these areas have abundant migratory and benthic habit fisheries resources. Because the coastal landforms of Hualien are very steep and cliffy, there were less proper places for building harbors. Right now, there are only Hualien, Shi-Ti, and Yanliau, these three fishery harbors, and few shoals for small fishery rafts to anchor.

Hualien fishery harbor is inside of Hualien international harbor district, close to Hualien city. The harbor is an artificial one with a very long dike, and the construction of harbor was began at 1931, the Japanese colonized era. Sailfishes, bonitos, dolphinfishes, tunas and sunfishes are major objectives of catching , and fishing techniques follow some old process, as long line, gill net and spear fishing. There is a fish market inside of harbor, visitors can buy fresh seafood over there, and stores can cook foods for you right away. The whale-watching harbor started using at 2002, and it is always packed with tourist during summer time.

Shi-Ti fishery harbor is in Feng Bin village of Hualien. Shi-Ti has good coastal landforms for building harbor, however the location of harbor is far away from development area, so the fishermen often sell their fishes in other harbors and back with empty ships. At earliest time in Shi-Ti harbor, traditional fishing techniques of aboriginal were used. Then the milk fish-catching rafts are popular in Japanese colonized era. After 1959, the harbor was constructed to what it is like today, and spear fishing becomes major fishing technique of Shi-Ti. It is also famous because of the first whale-watching boat was operated at here, 1997.
